Value tool kit

I've been teaching in-depth color classes for over 25 years and value is one of the most important aspects when creating a quilt. Having high (light), medium, and low (dark) values in each quilt we create helps to move our eye around the piece and holds our interest.

We use these beholders and value charts regularly in my classes, but it is important to understand how to use them correctly.

Instructions:
To see the different values in your fabrics, look at warm colors (red, orange, and yellow) through the green beholder, and look at cool colors (green, blue, and purple) through the red beholder. The red beholder cancels out the cool colors and makes them look grayish or neutral, the green beholder cancels out the warm colors and makes them look grayish or neutral.

In fabrics that have both warm and cool colors in it, use your Gray Scale. Place your Gray Scale over (for example) the orange in your fabric so that two or three holes (Values 4, 5, & 6) on the scale are on the orange of the fabric. Then put the green beholder in front of your face and squint. On which value hole does the orange in the fabric seem to blend with the edges of the hole? If it is Value #5, then you know that the orange in your fabric is equal in value to the #5 on the Value Scale.
Repeat the same thing with your cool color (example, blue) but this time use the red beholder. Place three holes of the Value Scale over the blue fabric (Values 1, 2, & 3) and put the red beholder in front of your face and squint. On which value hole does the blue in the fabric seem to blend with the edges of the hole? If it is Value #2, then you know that the blue in your fabric is equal in value to the #2 on the Value Scale.

Color is relative because color changes depending upon what color it is surrounded by, but here are a few basic value hints:
Yellow = high value (values 8-10)
Pink = medium high to medium value (values 3-7)
Orange = medium value (values 4-7)
Green = medium value (values3-6)
Blue = low value (values 1-3)
Red = low value (values 1-3)
Purple = low value (values 1-3)
