Azeta and Fati are loading their donkeys to go to the market. Donkeys play an important role as a stepping stone out of poverty for many people in West Africa. They are often called “beasts of burden” because they are energetic, strong animals. They are used to haul carts, carry goods and people, and pull water from deep wells. Many families view them as partners as they are highly intelligent and have a friendly nature. Donkeys even act as watchdogs in the family compounds!
