Statement: While living in Burkina Faso, Mali and Benin, I befriended many Tuareg men who are traditionally nomads who roam the Sahara Desert carrying goods from North Africa to Sub-Saharan Africa. They make beautiful handicrafts from leather and steel.
So many hours we spent together laughing and drinking Tuareg tea!
The nickname “blue men” has been given to these proud men because they typically wear indigo blue turbans to protect themselves from the sun and the sand storms when they cross the desert on their camels. The indigo in the fabric rubs off on their skin and sometimes gives them a blue tint.
This quilt is a tribute to my Tuareg friends.
Blue Men is the nickname given to the nomadic Tuaregs who roam the Sahara desert on their camels. They wear indigo blue turbans which gives their skin a blue tint. This quilt is a tribute to the many Tuareg men I befriended while living in Africa. This is a whole cloth quilt, painted only with blue dye. The many colors of thread in the quilting give it a touch of reality.
