Ibrahim is a beekeeper displaying his homemade beehives. Beekeeping has been practiced for hundreds of years in West Africa. Made from woven straw, clay, wood, or gourds, the traditional hives are placed high in the trees. Wild bees enter the hives, where they attach honeycombs to the tops and sides of the surfaces. When it’s time to  harvest the honey, beekeepers like Ibrahim will use smoke to calm the bees so that they can remove the honeycombs without getting stung.
