Fatoumata is a young Fulani girl carrying goods in the basin on her head. The Fulani are a nomadic people whose territory has no borders in West Africa. Traditionally, they have wandered much of the area   south of the Sahara Desert. These shepherds make  and sell yogurt and cheese made with the milk from their large herds of cattle, sheep and goats. Proud of their beautiful women, Fulani men spend most of their money on jewelry made with trade beads, amber, or gold for the women to wear. From a young age, girls like Fatoumata will wear jewelry, including beautiful beads woven into their braids that often fall across their foreheads.
