Influences of Africa

1 hour lecture

Leaving the USA just after college and living most of my adult life in West Africa has had a major impact on my artwork. During this lecture, using both slides of my work and of my life in Africa, I lead the audience through a voyage starting with my discovery of African cloth, and ending with my return to the U.S. and the making of my African imagery quilts.

The Relationship Between Drawing and Quilting

1 hour lecture

It is difficult for most quilters to understand how much a drawing class can help their quilting. In this lecture, I talk about the concepts of drawing and how acquiring some basic knowledge can help all quilters. The concepts I will be discussing are:
  • Line
  • Negative Space and Positive Shapes
  • Light and Shadow
  • Perspective
In order for the audience to better understand how these concepts can help them, I will show slides of both traditional and contemporary quilts that illustrate a good use of line, negative spaces, light and shadow or perspective. These quilts are made by a wide variety of quilters from the USA and Europe.

The Emotion of Color

1 hour lecture

Since 2000 my work has progressed into monochromatic. Working in just one color has been an interesting and exciting adventure. Art can carry a strong emotion and specific colors reinforce these emotions. I will be speaking about the evolution of color and how we can use different colors to emphasize what we want to say in our art.

West African Textiles

1 hour lecture

West Africa has an extremely rich culture in textiles. It produces some of the most beautiful fabrics in all of Africa and is known worldwide for its traditional weavers, dyers and the elegant dress of the people. In this presentation, I will help the audience understand the importance of the cloths in West Africa and how much the everyday life revolves around them. I will also bring with me a variety of  hand-woven, industrial woven and printed textiles from Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Niger, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria.
