In the north of Burkina Faso, there is a place where a number of different artists have carved very unusual and majestic sculptures in granite boulders. This site is lost in the middle of nowhere, just south of the Sahara desert. My husband was taken to this special haven where he photographed nomadic children playing among the sculptures. The photographs he took were beautiful and eerie. They seemed to represent the strength of mankind against the fragility of a child. I chose to paint "Be Not Afraid" in six values of a peach colored dye to reinforce the surreal aspect of the imagery. It was then quilted by machine using many realistically colored threads.
